Wine Pairing

Pairing your dinner properly with the wines that accent the food you are eating will only make your guests enjoy the occasion more! Here are a few tips on how to choose which wines to serve with which foods!

wine pairing with Gray Monk Wines

1. The wine should be more acidic than the food you are eating.
2. The wine should be sweeter than the food.
3. The wine should have the same flavour intensity as the food.
4. Red wines pair best with stronger, bolder flavoured meats (e.g. red meat).
5. White wines pair best with lighter-intensity meats (e.g. fish or chicken).
6. Bitter wines (e.g. red wines) are best balanced with fat.
7. It is better to match the wine with the sauce than with the meat.
8. More often than not, White, Sparkling and Rosé wines create contrasting pairings.
9. More often than not, Red wines will create congruent pairings.

Thanksgiving Décor

Now that you have the menu all sorted, let’s talk about the décor! You want the setting to make your event memorable. A little extra effort will have your thanksgiving stand out from other events. This doesn’t mean you need to break the bank to do it, simply shopping in your back yard and gardens this time of the year will give you a great starting point! Deb has a few “go-to” items that she using for almost all of her tablescapes and then she changes up the natural décor. Here are a few staples to have.

Tablescape Décor Check List

Table runners – Linen in different colours and pattern works wonders for a table runner! Having a few in different colours and sizes gives you the opportunity to layer a couple on top of each other or having one to simply centre the table.

Vintage or unique containers – having some unique pieces such as dough bowls, vintage buckets, jars or even crocks that can hold candles or even a Christmas tree are wonderful to keep on hand. The best part is, you can use them for every season, just change out what is inside of them!

Plate chargers – a plate charger makes the setting feel much different than a regular dinner setting. It can really dress up the table and add some texture. Keeping the charger a neutral tone and texture will allow you to use it for every single special event rather than needed new ones for every season.

Classic dinnerware – having some extra special plates and flat wear also helps set your dinner apart from a regular dinner! Deb invested in beautiful vintage ironstone when she was in France last year and it only comes out for special occasions.

Candles – nothing makes a setting more beautiful then candles! Bulky big ones in different sizes are always appealing but simple skinny ones also give a beautiful look!

Natural décor – no matter the season, you can always find beautiful outdoor elements to add to your table. We even did a whole blog post on what you can use here! For Thanksgiving, a few of our favourites are:

  • Pumpkins
  • Apples
  • Artichokes
  • Hydrangeas
  • Coloured leaves
  • Mountain ash berries
  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Flax
