Can you give a brief introduction of yourself, your home and work?

Hey there!  My name is Laura and I’m a pastor’s wife and homeschooling mom of five.  We also have three border collies and live a very full life of friends, family and ministry.  So it was important to me to create a home that was welcoming to others but also worked hard and felt like a haven to us.

My online presence began to grow a few years ago when I started sharing about our $100 DIY’s and thrifted finds.  I really believe that anyone can create spaces they love to spend time in on a small budget.  I share projects and inspiration on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube as well as over on my website:

What year was your home built and do you have any details of the history or building process you would like to share?

We landed in this new construction house 13 years ago during the time when the US housing ‘bubble’ was bursting.  It was a nerve wracking time for us.  We’d flipped two previous homes and lived with in-laws for a year to be able to afford this house.  Ultimately, we landed safely, but when we did, there wasn’t a budget for decorating or furnishing.  So after a couple of years of no painting, decor or furniture purchases, I decided to start building it all myself.  We agreed on a $100 a month budget and now, looking back, I’m realizing just how much I was able to accomplish with that.  Of course there were changes along the way that required us to save and that were outside of that $100, but overall, we are pleased with how our budget stretched to make this house into a home that works for us.

How do you define your decor style? What are your favourite types of decor?

My style is handmade and creative, and I tend to be restricted by what I can make myself or find locally, but I’m also influenced heavily by history.  I love anything with a story and the images that draw me in tend to be European and pastoral...Belgian farmhouse, Georgian farmhouse, English cottage.  My interpretation of those styles in our home is with a touch of modern injected in and a dose of hygge.  The “simple” in Simple Farmhouse, to me, isn’t just about showing restraint with what comes into our home but also the relaxed nature of how spaces can work for a family without fear of messing things up or needing them to be perfect.

What is your favourite thing about your home? Do you have a favourite room or furniture piece?

It’s really hard to pick a favourite room because each space has evolved over time and with special elements that made them feel just right.  We spend the most time in our homeschool room and kitchen so I would have to say that my heart is most heavily invested in those two spaces.  But I’m also loving the little updates we are currently doing to our master bedroom….see, I can’t choose!

Do you have any big future plans for your home? What is next for you or your home?

I have a big wish list of projects that I can’t wait to start, but with the recognition that it will take years to complete them all.  I’m currently dreaming of a DIY master bedroom fireplace.  Some other to-do items include replacing the builder grade cabinets and countertop in the kitchen.

If you had one design or decor tip, what would it be?

Don’t do what everyone else is doing...that is, unless it’s really your style.  If white is the on-trend paint choice but you love color, go with color.  And just because you like something in someone else’s home does not mean you will like it in yours.  You can appreciate a rugged farmhouse style but know that it doesn’t fit with the architecture of your home or feel right for you.

The best way to figure out your personal style is to spend time pinning on Pinterest and then curate your results.  It may turn out that you actually like mid-century modern more than you realized.  Then, when it comes time to pull your space together, stick to the script.  Don’t deviate from your pinned style and your make-over will go much smoother.

Do you have a business or social media tip you can give to all those who want to start a blog or home decor business?

It all started with relationships.  I made connections on social media when I started sharing DIYs and it all flowed from there.  But I would have to say, the bottom line is, do what you love.  That is the magic element that always shines through in your work.  If you try to be someone else it becomes very hard to continue to create every day and also very exhausting to keep up - content creation is a lot of work.  When you are inspired and feel creative with your own passions it becomes far easier to share and engage others with that passion.

On a more practical level, I’d recommend starting with one layer at a time.  Maybe it’s learning how to grow YouTube - including video editing and how that platform works, and then build from there.  It’s overwhelming to try and master the whole content creation business all at once.
