I don’t believe in design rules, and I definitely don’t believe in buying things just to fill a space. I believe in surrounding yourself with things that actually mean something.
It is so easy to fall into the trap of waiting for the perfect house, the bigger budget, or the season of life when things finally slow down. There is no perfect moment to start. There is just the decision to stop waiting and do it. Collect and surround yourself with what you love, but don’t add things just to add them. Build it yourself.
I’m Deborah McDonald, and I split my time between two very different places: a 1903 Queen Anne Victorian in town that we are slowly restoring room by room, and a 12×32 off-grid cabin tucked into the trees on my grandfather’s old property. One is filled with salvaged stained glass and antique ironstone; the other is a stripped-back garden shed surrounded by four lakes and a whole lot of quiet.
But the philosophy behind both of them is exactly the same: Simplicity with a story.
