Why We Love This Recipe

This happens to be my whole family’s favorite type of pie! My grandma made it, and her grandma made it, and her grandma made it before her, too. It is probably the oldest family recipe I have! For almost any occasion we get invited to, this is my go-to dessert! It turns out perfectly every time and tastes amazing!

This pie is so simple that even my daughter has made it independently since she was about 9. It has the perfect combination of sweet and sour and will leave you wanting more!  Ok… let’s make a pie!!

Where to Find Saskatoon Berries

Let’s talk all about the famous Saskatoon berry! This is a favorite summer fruit for my family, and it grows natively in Alberta, Canada.

Native to Canada, the Saskatoon berry is found throughout North America! Saskatoon berries grow abundantly in the wild and can be found in the prairies, along river banks, on the edges of lakes, and even in the mountains! They are also referred to as Serviceberries or Juneberries. Although these little guys may look like blueberries, they are much different, slightly tarter, and contain eatable seeds.

These yummy berries look a lot like their cousin, the blueberry, but the flavor is very different. While the blueberry is sweet and can have a soft texture at times, the Saskatoon berry has a much earthier burst of flavor and is generally firm. Saskatoons also have delicious edible seeds inside that add to the uniqueness of this berry.

In recent years, I have found Saskatoon berries at some local grocery stores in the frozen foods section. If you live in an area that grows them locally, like I do, you can head to a picking farm or purchase them at the farmers market. We have a few bushes growing in our backyard that are producing well, and I am excited to have enough to finally make pies!

Ingredient Substitutes

If you can’t get your hands on Saskatoon berries, this recipe will work with so many other types of yummy berries!

Blueberries are the closest in taste and texture to saskatoons, but you can also use blackberries, huckleberries, raspberries, or cherries. If you live in Alberta, a great substitute for this pie recipe is haskap berries.

Deb’s Tips

This recipe is so easy that you don’t need a ton of tips but here are a few I always like to keep in mind.

  • Keep the pie dough chilled to ensure a flaky crust. Warm dough can become tough to work with.
  • Add a hint of almond extract to your filling for a delicious depth of flavor.
  • Make sure you remove all the stems from the berries, or you will have an unwanted crunch when you take a bite.
  • Measure 4 cups of berries into individual small bags and pop them in your freezer for future pie-making.

How To Store

To store your baked Saskatoon berry pie in the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, for up to 3-4 days.

For longer storage, freeze the pie by wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil, and it will keep for up to 2 months. To reheat, simply place the pie in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through.

  1. Is there a place us Americans can purchase these berries? I’d love to try them.

    1. I have been able to purchase mine at the local CO-OP grocery store in the frozen foods before but I’m not sure about the US. You could maybe ask where you shop for groceries? They are so delicious.
